Antique rifle uncovered: Few soldiers serving in Afghanistan’s troubled Helmand Province would expect to be employed handling antiques, but that’s exactly what one soldier has been doing. Aaron Gray, a Fusilier with the 1st Battalion, the Royal Welsh, has been tasked with cleaning a World War Two-era Lee Enfield Mk 4 rifle uncovered by troops. “I couldn’t believe it when the guys brought it back to our base. It’s a real piece of history,” said Aaron. “This rifle was made by the Americans during the Second World War and given to their allies. It’s amazing to think about the journey it took to get here to Helmand Province.”

Over 100 Canadian and US personnel from The Princess Louise Fusiliers, New Hampshire Army National Guard, Land Force Atlantic Area HQ, 36 Canadian Brigade Group HQ, The West Nova Scotia Regiment, The 1st Battalion, The Nova Scotia Highlanders, 33 Field Ambulance (Halifax), Canadian Forces Health Services (Atlantic), 37 Signals Regiment Detachment (Saint John) took part on the exercise held from 26 Apr – 7 May, 2012. The exercise also helped foster camaraderie, boost moral and bridged the gap between Canadian and US soldiers.
